The Gyre arrived on process station MT3 around 12 pm on June 3, 2001. The photo depicts Paul Clark and Mike Fredericks preparing the downward looking 300 kHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) for deployment. The ADCP was deployed first at this 1000 m station so that we can learn more about the bottom currents at the site while we're sampling. The benthic lander was deployed next and we headed about a mile west of it to start water sampling with the CTD and collect sediments with the boxcore for incubations. The corrosive links on the lander corroded faster than estimated and we had to pick up the benthic lander after our first process boxcore. All of the sampling devices on the lander worked as anticipated so we deployed it again, this time relying on burn wire releases to release the lander afer 18 hours. Boxcoring continued through the night and a baited camera was also deployed close to the ADCP. The lander was retrieved but the baited camera was never relocated. We tried to pick the baited camera up while trawling but unfortunately we lost our trawl net. After picking up the ADCP we headed toward the next survey station at 10 pm on June 4, 2001. |
