Thursday, May 31, 2001

Last summer the field work concentrated on community structure and species composition. This year we will also investigate biogeochemical processes in the deep Eastern Gulf of Mexico. The benthic lander was successfully tested in Galveston with the help of Greg Boland (right) from MMS. The lander will be deployed at four of the twelve stations.

Graduate students, Min Chen, Karen Sell, AndyHebert, Jessy Chen, and Shawna Powell, on the top deck waiting for others in the scientific party and the crew members for a general meeting. After safety drills and tying down the scientific gear and equipment, we left the dock. The R/V Gyre departed from Galveston at 10 am and we are making way to our first survey station, MT1.
