Station W1

GYRE arrived on Station W1 at 19:39 GMT on May 13, 2000 and finished all sampling at 4:39 GMT on May 14,2000. Before arriving at this shallow station (400 m in depth) we met a ship at the Shell Auger platform to pick up our new pinger and a new battery pack. We are grateful for the great cooperation we received from Shell Offshore Inc. in Fourchon, LA, who let us send the replacement parts out on their supply boat M/V AMY CHOUEST. We successfully deployed the digital underwater camera with the newly charged pinger. A tiny fish was found in one of the boxcores which all contained mud that was rather gritty much like diatomaceous earth. The trawl was very successful and we caught more fish and invertebrates than at any other station. The organisms included a squid, an octopus, many shrimp, shells, batfish and dogfish.

Leslie Zednai is identifying some of the fish caught in the trawl.
